Mike first picked up the guitar when he was in the second grade, and from that moment onward he never looked back. Driven by a passion for the instrument, and by an insatiable appetite for music in general, Mike threw himself headlong first into rock, then into jazz, and then classical guitar; and also navigated a great deal of the ground in-between. After high school, Mike attended the School of Music at BYU, where throughout his undergraduate he received separate scholarships for guitar performance, academics, and songwriting. While at BYU, he studied jazz and classical guitar with Larry Green and songwriting and production with Ron Simpson. Mike graduated from BYU in the spring of 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in Media Music.
Mike has over 8 years of experience teaching the guitar and in addition to teaching privately has served as an instructor at BYU’s School of Music, The Music School (formerly Crescent School of Music), and Maeser Preparatory Academy. In addition to teaching, Mike works extensively throughout Utah and the mountain west as a live and session guitarist and vocalist. Mike’s rock, blues, country, jazz, classical, and folk guitar playing has been heard on the radio, seen on television , featured on backing tracks to various Scera and Hale Center Theater productions (as well as many others across the nation), and in just about every live scenario imaginable. Mike has played in clubs, concert halls, living rooms, theaters, garages, amphitheaters, fairgrounds, and arenas (and even more outlandish and interesting places), and has done so playing all kinds of music. Mike has backed up Broadway stars, played ACDC covers with ACDC’s old drummer (Chris Slade), opened for and shared the stage with Jo Dee Messina, Diamond Rio, Chris Cagle, Sawyer Brown, Emerson Drive, 9-time grammy award winners Asleep at the Wheel, John Michael Montgomery, Blackhawk, Little Texas, Restless Heart, and others beside…as well as playing your cousin’s wedding reception in the in-law’s back yard…and he loves it all!
